[Finished] Icewind Dale no magic items challenge run

lol...he's the reason I like gnomes more than I used to. It reminds me of the time his cousin Rintin Jansen was negotiating a turnip trade with a Calimshite merchant. You see, Rintin actually had been in Calimshan some years back, but on business totally unrelated to turnips. It was a really...

Looking for a game suggestion (open ended)

I have it on my GOG list, but it's not currently on sale. I'm interesting, but that game makes me a little anxious. Like, you're definitely going to die in that game, it's just a matter of when. That's kind of a heavy thing to have hanging over my head. 🤣

    Icewind Dale with Basically Experts

I think I'm about ready to call this run. I know I'm close to the end and I could just finish it off, but a) this party doesn't feel any different than a non-challenge run party at this point and b) I picked up a few things at a GoG summer sale that I really want to get into. As I mentioned in...

[Finished] Icewind Dale no magic items challenge run

I agree with this. Don't get me wrong, IWD is my favorite IE game and the one I've replayed through more than any other, but it can be tough to avoid getting to a point where every party feels like a min-max party and you're not just steamrolling through everything. I was just about to post...

    Icewind Dale with Basically Experts

Totally agree. On top of that, there's buff stacking, but I'll get into that. Wyrm's Tooth was a breeze. The trolls and occasional yetis on the surface were barely a speed bump. The aquatic museum was a little tougher. The most annoying part of it were the frost salamander's auras. However, the...

    Icewind Dale with Basically Experts

In typical me fashion, I have been forgetting to screenshot. All I have is this for upper Dorn's Deep. This was after I cleared the area, rested in the next area, and tried to come back to sell swag to the ornery mage that hides out here. I noped out of clearing this level again. The...

[Finished] Icewind Dale no magic items challenge run

They definitely have an easier time getting through (50% MR I believe), though sometimes I cork up the front with skeletons to buy some time and the party pelts them at range. Or, I put free action on my tanks and they get a few free shots when web does proc for the drow.

[Finished] Icewind Dale no magic items challenge run

Was that your first high quality weapon? I usually find stacks of swords, maces, and even axes and morning stars in the Vale of Shadows. I'm working through upper dorn's now and am about to fight the lich. That bridge fight in the second area can be tough, but my strategy is usually to rush...

    Icewind Dale with Basically Experts

That's true. If I had a bard, their kill count would likely be close to zero since they would be singing all the time (which is definitely something). And, my cleric buffs are valuable, as is the undead they summon for fodder. It just seems odd to me that when the action starts happen, they...

    Icewind Dale with Basically Experts

This is just an interlude with a couple observations. I'm surprised Curgek's kill count is so high (in that he is keeping up with Eldon). Up until recently, he has been using Conlan's Hammer for quite a while, which pales in comparison to the Fast Flail Eldon is using. Eldon, with Cat's Grace...

    Icewind Dale with Basically Experts

On one hand, this dungeon is probably the least linear part of the game. On the other hand, it is still pretty straightforward. Everything is undead, so the clerics can turn the mobs and pick them off at their leisure. Prior to the resting level where you access the spires, the enemies are...

[Finished] Icewind Dale no magic items challenge run

Agreed. It's easily my favorite dungeon in the game due to it's variety and diversity. I mean, it's mostly shadow creatures, but the sentient shadows and quests with them are interesting. And the art is done well, so restoring the fountains and arboretum has a nice payoff. I have run through the...

What's the last game you've finished?

I'm currently doing an Icewind Dale run and need something as a palette cleanser before I start an entirely new concept for an Icewind Dale run. I saw that Riven was on sale on GoG. I played this game after it came out when I was a kid. This series (Myst) was basically the only video games my...

If you could sit down with James Ohlen to discuss his work on the original Baldur's Gate games, what would you want to ask him?

That's a bit outside my scope since I never picked up BG3. I have heard some stories, though. Stuff about Sarevok's redemption being pointless, some twists with Viconia, etc. However, if we're talking about the creative process, ToB came out in 2001 and all the story choices were made with...

If you could sit down with James Ohlen to discuss his work on the original Baldur's Gate games, what would you want to ask him?

Sure thing. One thing before I start, I'm not counting SoD as part of the canon. This is largely due to it being created well after the fact by a third party, making the narrative basically fan-fiction to me. Like, I'm not looking down on it for being third party, but the story in the core games...

If you could sit down with James Ohlen to discuss his work on the original Baldur's Gate games, what would you want to ask him?

I want to preface my question to provide context. James Ohlen is no slouch. I think I read that he was a long time DM before even getting into game design. So, he went into BG knowing the system and even setting pretty well (Forgotten Realms was the flagship during that time). On top of that...

The Candlekeep Annex: RPed Baldur’s Gate No and Low Reload Adventures

Level 3 would have been better. You would have had 29hp on average and an extra 10% chance to hit. Actually, I forgot to account for this before, but if you prot. evil on yourself before the fight, you knock his output down another 10%. That might be enough to close the gap and at least give you...

The Candlekeep Annex: RPed Baldur’s Gate No and Low Reload Adventures

Karlat is level 5 with a base THAC0 of 15 and 35hp. You have (presumably) 14hp and a base THAC0 of 20. Your Strength gives you 2 points more to your THAC0 than his, but he still has the edge. You do have him beat on AC by 4 points total (3 from armor, 1 from Dex) and do 5 points of damage more...

    Icewind Dale with Basically Experts

Deeper the Bears delved into Dragon's Eye. There they found what appeared to be a retreat for Eldathians. Needless to say, the party was suspicious. The fake Eldathians swarmed the party. Almost everyone in the area seemed to be drawn to the battle. But a Web and Slow from Aethelis helped...

So pleased about AI producing portraits that were previously in short supply: and good ones too.

I'm happy to give you a challenge if you want a particular subject. My idea for this next run is for the main character to be an initiate paladin of Tyr from Waterdeep sent to the north on a particular quest to prove himself. There he is caught up in IWD's story. He has two companions with...
