So pleased about AI producing portraits that were previously in short supply: and good ones too.

What are you using to generate them? I've been using ChatGPT (so Dall-E by extension) because it's free. I'm trying to create some particular Icewind Dale style portraits, but it's been over a week of prompting (I only get so many renders/chats a day with the free program) and I've only just barely landed in the neighborhood of the style (though it is still rendering my subject inaccurately). I am hoping that, by the time I'm ready to actually do the run, I will have something serviceable.

I think that AI has trouble with any kind of subjective or abstract concepts. I had asked it to do a portrait, then gave it a detailed prompt to help it render the same portrait in the style of impressionism like Monet or Renoir (or Justin Sweet, to be more accurate) and all it did was make the original image blurry. 🤣
If you want to use any of my photos on this thread as backgrounds for your portraits, please feel free to do so. Some of the ones of mountains behind clouds are quite similar to some of the Icewind Dale images. If you use them, I would be interested in seeing your results.

I'm really trying to create specifically Justin Sweet's style. The IWD portraits are easily my favorite portraits of any of the IE games. Chatgpt can do portraits pretty easy if you're not fussy about the look (e.g. are fine with just generic fantasy art), but has trouble when getting down to specifics.

I am tempted to work on this question for fun when I have time this week. I am thinking I will load up every IWD portrait into the "use image as reference" function, and try my hardest to accurately describe the art style in a way it will understand. Then try to generate a whole series of portraits if the look is good enough. I am at least confident I can get it to have an accurate color palette this way at least.

I'm happy to give you a challenge if you want a particular subject.

My idea for this next run is for the main character to be an initiate paladin of Tyr from Waterdeep sent to the north on a particular quest to prove himself. There he is caught up in IWD's story. He has two companions with him. One is his younger brother, a Painbearer of Illmater. The other is a bard, though in the fiction he is essentially a scribe for the order meant to bear (impartial) witness of the paladin's exploits and report back to the Order for review of the paladin's membership. The thing is that the cleric and bard are only there for support. They are merely attendants and are not fighting alongside the paladin. They can use support magics, but the paladin has to face his foes alone. This is part of the quest given to him by the order to prove himself.

What does this have to do with portraits? Well, since I have such a twisted sense of humor, I'm basing each character (aesthetically) after one of the Three Stooges. Moe is the paladin, Curly is the cleric, and Larry is the bard. It has been a pain getting the portraits to portray slightly younger versions of the Three Stooges. I get close on the style, but then chatGPT scrambles their faces. Larry is especially tough because I'm trying to get his portrait with him playing a rebec (basically medieval precursor to the violin) and ai art has trouble with bows (as WiseGrimwald mentioned).

Here are two samples to show you what I mean.

We're not quite at Justin Sweet's style, but getting closer. The only thing I prompted between the first and second was to change the haircut to Moe's bowl cut. It does, but now the face looks even less like Moe's.

But, yeah, that's what I tried working on.
