Wow, what a list, @Black Elk, what a walk down memory lane... I started playing in what you call a "PC Era" and totally missed on all the console stuff.

At first I thought 'well I probably can't even list 100 games that I've played' let alone a top 100 lol, but then I tried it just to see what I would recall. Lo and behold, Arcade games and Nintendo got a pretty deep hook in there, from very early on hehe.
I definitely skipped over some stuff, like when I got a bit more hardcore in my PC phases hehe. I mean I'm sure I played something other than battlefront 2 on that ps2 which would have been concurrent, but then again, not really. I mean I know what ate the hours up there lol. Also there is the question, like can I really count Everquest and WoW? Even though I had roommates where that was the talking lamp, always on at all times. Or like you know, do I really count that one Half Life run where I basically watched dude play the whole game, but never even had a savegame to myself? lol. ME was sorta like that as well for me, I basically spectated on a few campaigns there, some that I would give honorable mention for sure though, just from like watching them on the couch half blitzed out.
Some got left off the list on that rationale. My mom's friend who had Vampire on her work rig though! Probably I would say yes to that one, couple solid runs there lol. Later in life there have been many titles that are probably more significant too, just from the standpoint of like art direction or cool story resonances that I'd be more inclined to rep in the lasting tally. It was a lot of fireworks early on from those first gen consoles though.
I mean I was struck just remembering how back then, within the friend group, you sorta all had to all pull together to make it happen. I mean newer games, that's only like for Birthdays or Xmas, and well before rentals were really a thing, peeps had be strategic about it all hehe
I recall trading and borrowing cartridges and later discs back and forth, many times, or if someone swooped one title and had it at their house, we'd play it there. But when the time came to get a new game, we'd sort of split up the horde that way, to spread out the options at different locations. Or on weekends for the shuffle lol
Arcade gaming to me was essentially Middle School on bikes, but I do think it goes back to the beginning even a bit earlier. For the longest of times, there'd be a laundromat or a corner store and excuses to loiter with quarters.
Some rogue pizza place, or maybe a mini golf or movie theater with next level options, but usually more like what was on offer in walking distance haha.
At some point the glitz and glam of the Arcade stand up, which had until then always had the more epic sweep and primo pixel counts, was replaced by the concept of a Saved Game or a harddrive.
Whether in the controller or on deck or whatever it was, but basically that built in saved game option. I think that changed it all up, because prior to that, those later consoles building that stuff into themselves, that had been the realm of pc computer gaming. In my head I still have a division between games which were played on controllers for home consoles or joysticks in the arcade, and games played on a computer with a mouse and a keyboard. Sorta exclusively a computer game in my mind. Like even if flight sims had joysticks or controllers existed for PCs, it was the whole idea that some games were just sorta keyed up for that and others not so much. But then when the consoles got more advanced those limits sorta lifted away, and the differences between hardware became much less pronounced. I don't know, but yeah, back in the day, Nintendo had some kinda power - that's for sure!
Blowing into the cartridge hehe
Like was it the best of all times?
Might have been!
It's like our version of Ludo, or Snakes and Ladders I guess. Pick up stix and Jacks. I'll remember the Contra code 99 for all time, like hopefully that's the game if I ever have to Seventh Seal the deal.
