Horror CRPGs

Hi everyone, I was wondering if any of you are well versed in horror crpgs. I would love to hear what your favourites are, and why.

My greatest hope was that we’d one day see an isometric Ravenloft game, but barring that unlikely miracle, are there good horror titles out there? For instance, are any of the Lovecraftian games good?

There's a really good old-school action RPG called Veil of Darkness. It's generally considered to be the precursor to Diablo.

In the adventure RPG genre, there's Quest for Glory 4. It's pretty good.

FLARE is an open source action RPG comparable to Diablo 2, it has a dark fantasy style and tone.

I don't think I know any horror RPGs at all. I've wathced some LPs of games I assume are in the horror genre; Call of Cthuhlu (narrative first person), Pathologic (first person, has inventory management and survival elements). I played a few minutes of Amnesia (first person, narrative I think) but although I enjoy horror movies and shows it was obvious I didn't enjoy games! I still remember vividly the "horror" quest of the haunted house in Vampire the masquerade bloodlines, but that was just one single quest.

I'd say, Vampire Masqurade: Bloodlines. I played this game just after release, and it was buggy as hell back then, but it was still one of the best crpg I've played. There is an unofficial patch, that is developed for like a decade, which turns this game into much, much better experience. What I like the most in this game, is that choosing a clan determines the way you play the game. Playing let's say Malkavian is completely different from playing a Nosferatu. It's like two completely different games. I thought about returning to this game couple of times and maybe I will someday. I definitely still remember bits of the story, some characters.

Despite having a deep love for horror RPG settings like Ravenloft or Call of Cthulhu, I actually haven't played very many horror CRPGs. (Or horror games in general.) In more recent entries, I've heard that Control does a really good job of adopting a "SCP"-style horror game. They're also remaking the "Alone in the Dark" franchise, which I do actually have my eye on; I played the original AitD and while the graphics are laughably crude and hilarious by today's standards, I still remember how the game practically OOZED atmosphere and Cthulhu-lore, so much so that I even ran some short CoC games based on the Derketo mansion and the horrors hidden within it.
