I think Age of Wonders 4 could be my way into strategy games again (my long forgotten love), but it's too pricey now. I'll add it too to the whishlist and wait for a good discount. The problem I have with modern strategy games is that they tend to have multitude of DLCs almost as pricey as the main game.

The game launched with positive reviews from players and broke some records for the AoW series. I'm really interested to try it out.

If you start playing, please feel free to share your impressions.

As someone who has played every AoW game, it’s really fun, but I kinda dislike how homogenous all the races feel in this new direction the franchise is going in. I miss how the different races had different units. How they do it in this game makes it feel generic and bland in terms of racial variety.

For context, in previous games, each race had their own unique units and cultures. In this game, however, you pick your race, and then you pick your culture from a list of generic cultures that doesn’t change no matter which race you choose. As a result, a human barbarian kingdom plays just the same as an orc barbarian kingdom, an elf industrialist plays just like a dwarf industrialist, etc.

As a result, it’s a blast to play at first, but it gets very repetitive and boring pretty quickly. I’m already taking a break from it, after having played it for about a week. I’m considering getting AoW 2 again (imo the pinnacle of the series. It builds off of the original game, and adds more to it. AoW 3 was only good with the DLC that really should have come with the base game).
